The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, also known as Vembanad Bird Sanctuary, is a popular bird watching destination located in Kumarakom, a village in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India. It is situated on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, which is the largest lake in Kerala and a Ramsar site of international importance.
Spread over an area of approximately 14 square kilometers (5.4 square miles), the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is home to a wide variety of bird species, both resident and migratory. The sanctuary provides a favorable habitat for birds, including waterfowl, herons, egrets, kingfishers, owls, cuckoos, and many more.
The best time to visit the sanctuary for bird watching is from November to February when the migratory birds from different parts of the world, including Siberia, visit the region. During this period, you can witness the arrival of several species such as the Siberian crane, spot-billed pelican, egret, teal, and many others.
Visitors can explore the sanctuary on foot or by boat. There are well-laid-out pathways and watchtowers within the sanctuary, providing excellent viewpoints to observe the birds in their natural habitat. The tranquil atmosphere of the sanctuary, surrounded by lush greenery and the scenic Vembanad Lake, adds to the charm of the bird-watching experience.
Apart from bird watching, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary offers opportunities for boating and photography. Boating through the calm waters of the lake allows visitors to get closer to the avian inhabitants and enjoy the serene beauty of the surroundings.
The sanctuary is also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including mangrove forests, coconut groves, and aquatic plants. The rich biodiversity of the sanctuary makes it a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
